Crossing the Gulf Stream: A First-Timer's Guide to the Bahamas

Timing the window, clearing in, and finding your rhythm across the islands.

Crossing the Gulf Stream: A First-Timer's Guide to the Bahamas

For many of our owners, the first crossing to the Bahamas is the trip that changes everything. Sixty-odd miles of open water separate South Florida from a different pace of life — and with a little planning, it's an easy, beautiful run.

Timing the window

The Gulf Stream is at its friendliest when there's no north in the wind. We watch for a settled two-to-three-day window, leave at first light, and let the current carry us north as we steer for West End or Bimini.

Clearing in

Your first stop ashore is customs and immigration. Have your paperwork in order, fly your yellow Q flag, and the process is quick and friendly. From there, the islands open up:

  • The Abacos — protected sailing waters and storybook settlements.
  • The Exumas — that impossible turquoise, swimming pigs, and empty cays.
  • Eleuthera & Harbour Island — pink sand and a quiet, polished charm.

We help with the route, the clearance, and the introductions — so your first crossing feels like your tenth.
