Description
MOTONUI 1990 Elan 43 Asking USD 119,000 Located in Sandnes, Norway Motonui is a 1990 Elan 43 conceived for serious passagemaking. Drawn by J&J Design and built in Begunje for Elan, she belongs to a generation of moderate-displacement cruisers that reward careful preparation. Norwegian-owned from new, she has remained in attentive hands and has been used for the purpose her lines suggest: long stages, open water, and life aboard. Her ocean record is part of her character. Motonui has crossed the Atlantic on more than one occasion and has taken part in ARC. Successive owners have upgraded her for that kind of work, and the present custodians, who acquired her in 2024 with Atlantic ambitions of their own, continued that programme when their plans changed—refining energy systems, sail inventory, and driveline so that the next owner inherits a yacht already oriented toward bluewater readiness. She is not presented as a new yacht. Motonui has been sailed, has crossed oceans, and naturally shows the marks of that history. What distinguishes her is the continuity of maintenance and improvement, and the fact that many of the larger and more costly undertakings associated with an older offshore cruiser have already been addressed. Receipts, photographs, and workshop records accompany the vessel. On deck, the arrangement favours short-handed confidence. The cockpit is large and protective, with sheets and halyards led aft. An in-mast furling mainsail and Furlex headsail furler simplify sail handling; a removable cutter stay with running backstays (both 2020) allows a smaller headsail when the breeze freshens. Standing rigging was renewed in 2015, the D1 lowers were replaced on both sides in 2021, and much of the running rigging has been refreshed from 2020 onward. A rig survey in 2025 recorded no remarks. A Seldén Rodkicker, spinnaker pole, and Lewmar folding wheel complete the spar and steering inventory, with teak underfoot in the cockpit and on deck. Aft, a substantial swim platform and an extended solid pushpit serve boarding and dinghy work. Cockpit canvas was upgraded in 2026. Ground tackle is serious: electric windlasses at bow and stern, a 25 kg Vulcan with seventy metres of eight-millimetre chain forward, and a 20 kg Danforth-style plate anchor aft with thirty metres of ten-millimetre chain. Her sail wardrobe spans light air to heavy weather. North Sails supplied the furling mainsail (2020), the 130 percent furling genoa (2022), and the cutter staysail (2020). An Oxley Levante symmetric downwind sail from 2026 offers an efficient option in lighter air, and a storm trysail stands ready when conservatism is required. Below, three cabins and two heads support extended living, with berths for up to eight. The saloon is spacious and notably bright beneath its glazed coachroof; the table lowers for a daybed or extra berth, with a twelve-volt freezer beneath. The aft cabins are of similar size, the starboard cabin adding a pilot berth. Forward, a large cabin offers ample storage and a compact three-kilogram hanging washing machine. The forward head has a manual toilet and shower; the aft head has an electric toilet to a thirty-litre holding tank and a pull-out mixer usable as a shower. Slatted berth bases were fitted throughout in 2026, and headliners were renewed to skai in 2021. LED lighting includes red and white options in the saloon and heads for night vision on passage. The galley is arranged for independence at sea and at anchor: a large refrigerator (electronics renewed 2025), double sink, and a foot pump that normally draws seawater yet may switch to the freshwater tank if needed. A gas stove from 2021 remains available alongside a 2.2 kW induction cooktop and an electric oven with airfryer function (both 2025). Four hundred litres of fresh water and a Schenker Zen30 watermaker—approximately thirty litres per hour—support long periods away from the marina, reinforced by a 600 Ah LiFePO4 house bank, Victron MultiPlus II 3000 VA (2025), solar, and a 140 A Electromaax alternator with Wakespeed regulation. Navigation centres on a B&G suite: Zeus3S nine-inch chartplotter and Halo20+ radar (2021), Triton2 displays, wind sensing renewed in 2026, and a V60B VHF with integral AIS (2025), together with autopilot hardware and an Iridium GO for offshore communications. Propulsion is a Yanmar 4JHE of 44 horsepower with an Autoprop feathering propeller (2021). The engine carries 1,015 documented hours since 31 October 2019; verified hours prior to that date are not available. Service has been regular, most recently on 1 June 2026, with a new shaft and packing gland, and cleaned diesel system and heat exchanger, in 2026. A 140-litre diesel tank is supplemented by six jerry cans. For shore trips she carries a 2.70-metre aluminium-bottom dinghy and a 9.9 horsepower two-stroke outboard (tuned to 15 horsepower). Safety equipment is oriented to offshore and ARC standards, including EPIRB, a SeaGo six-person liferaft with hydrostatic release (new June 2021), life jackets, jacklines, flares, drogue, fire protection including a lithium extinguisher, and the Iridium GO, with tools and extensive spares aboard. Motonui lies in Sandnes, Norway, where viewing may be arranged by appointment. She is offered at USD 119,000 through Capt.
